In 2007, exactly 10 years ago, our daughter Madison “Madi” Ramon was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy at the age of 4. At that time, we had no idea how much it would forever change her life and ours, but with the support of family and friends, we were able to overcome some of the challenges she dealt with on a daily basis. As time went on though, we were faced with the reality that she was going to need continuous medical attention and treatment and became quite overwhelmed with all that entailed. Madi however continued to live life not really understanding her condition and enjoyed coloring, playing with dolls, watching movies with her sister and playing on her iPad, which is her all time favorite thing to do. With all the demands of taking care of Madi, we were blessed to have the support of Madi's Circle of HOPE and everyone who’s joined us on our journey since the day it was founded.
In 2010, a special needs trust was created by our family, primarily her aunt and uncle, to assist with medical bills, travel expenses to and from Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, and medication which continues to be one of her biggest expenses. With the help of Madi's Circle of HOPE Trust and everyone involved, we have been able to provide Madi with the best care possible and participate in the latest innovations to help control and hopefully one day eliminate her seizures.
In 2012, Madi underwent a surgery in which they implanted a VNS (Vegas Nerve Stimulator) device in hopes of eliminating her seizures all together, and although it worked temporarily, her seizures returned within one short year. More recently though, in November of 2015, Madi was chosen to participate in a study in which she was given Cannabidiol to reduce her seizures and improve the quality of her life.
Although the oil and medication has not fully eliminated her seizures, we have seen significant improvement. She went from having 20-30 seizures a day to 3-5 seizures on a good day. She is now in 8th grade and getting ready to turn 14, which is exciting and terrifying all at the same time. As she gets older, her situation gets more complicated but we are hopeful that she will one day live a seizure free life, and we would really appreciate your support at our 8th Annual Madi's Circle of HOPE 5K Fun Run which is an event created to help raise the necessary funds to continue her fight against epilepsy!
We are currently looking for sponsors and participants for this year’s event which has only been successful with the help we’ve received from our family, friends, sponsors, community members, local organizations, volunteers and countless others. Madi's Circle of HOPE 5K Fun Run/Walk is not a race, it is simply an opportunity to come together to raise awareness about Epilepsy and show our support for Madi’s cause. It is also a time for fellowship, food and fun, which is what Madi enjoys the most! So join us and be a part of our circle, Madi’s Circle of HOPE Trust Hearts OverPowering Epilepsy
